October 23rd Update

Bill had his fractures in the lower portion of his back fused today. I believe it was T2-T8, which was more than we originally thought. But the surgery went well and the surgeon believes that maybe there was the spinal injury was not as bad as they originally thought. Again, most of the understanding of the severity will come more from the PT & OT, and how well he responds to that. He is very heavily sedated this evening, but looks good and peaceful.

Mom is steadily waking up and they have weaned her morphine a bit. The OT nurse came today (she will come see Bill tomorrow) and asked her to do several things like wiggling her fingers, moving her arms, and wiggling her toes. We were all cheering her on and she did really well. They are suggesting (very initially) that she be a candidate for rehab, which is great. She would leave ICU and go through 1-2 "step-down" units, and then move into rehab. If Bill is a candidate as well, they may be able to go together if the timing is right. This is all very preliminary and there are more hurdles to get through, primarily getting them both off the ventilators, but is encouraging news.

I think we are all learning that this is a complicated, long process that is likely to have a lot of ups and downs. Today seemed to be more of an "up" day, so hopefully tomorrow will be as well.

As sad as I was to hear about Bill and Anne I know after prayer that they will be ok. My thoughts and many prayers are with your family. Thank you so much for keeping this blog updated. It is most helpful for those of us out of town. Much appreciated.

That's encouraging news, although as you say, the recovery experience is bound to be one of many ups and downs. We all pray that the ups will predominate.

I was thinking of Bill while jogging last night. I remember the roguish little smile and mischievous gleam in his eyes that would appear when he was about to launch a zinger of a comment. Having been on the receiving end of many of those zingers, I knew the look well. In retrospect, it was an endearing trait, and I hope Bill will be able to display it often in days to come. Tom

Tonight, at the regular rehearsal of The Virginians, we stopped and were led in prayer by Roy Foster. We all collectively prayed for Bill & Ann and their recovery. Please know that we are thinking of them and hope for a rapid recovery.

Recovery is a long road - all you can do is stay by them and stake out the doctors to be sure you get your questions answered. And be sure the doctors are talking to each other and aware of cross perscriptions. My mom fell in 2005 and broke her hip, and the incision became infected with staph. After two summers in the hospital and rehab, she now gets around easily and is free of infection. My father, on the other hand, was exhausted by monitoring her care. So be sure and take care of yourselves as well. Both of them are postitive, strong individuals. They're in my prayers. Cathy Tyler, FRB retired

. Dear Kelly,

Wanted to let Bill and Anne and you know that we in the chorus are deeply concerned and keeping you in our prayers. Last night at rehearsal Rev Roy Foster led us in prayer asking that God pick up and carry on what the doctors have begun in hope of a good recovery. At times like this we feel helpless but we want you to know that you are in our hearts and in our prayers. Please let us know if there is any way we can help. God bless.

Sincerely, Mike M

It's great to hear of the progress. Please know that all the Virginians send their encouragement and best wishes. Let them know we're all praying for them - individually and in our respective churches, I'm sure. I know they got one at St James in Montross Sunday.
